Following intervention by a Member of Legislative Council (MLC),from the teachers constituency over the demolition of a school in Mankhurd,Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has now sanctioned a building to Mohite Patil Vidyalaya.

Mohite Patil Vidyalaya,a government aided primary school in Mankhurd, was demolished by the MHADA on May 1,leaving 65 teachers and 1,300 students in lurch.

The school was functioning from a premises rented to them by MHADA since 1993.

The school was recently asked to vacate the place to make way for a multi-storey building.

“Ours is the only government recognised aided school in the area. We had requested the housing body to allot us a new premises to run the school. We even met ministers and authorities of education department but no one helped us,” said Namdeo Shinde, principal of Mohite Patil Vidyalaya.

The management then approached MLC Kapil Patil to intervene in the matter.

“Since we were paying the rent regularly they could have made arrangements for a new premises. Infact we had agreed to vacate the place if they provided us an alternate place nearby. However, after a meeting with MHADA,was arranged by MLC Kapil Patil, the authorities have agreed to sanction us a building in MHADA colony at Mankhurd,” Shinde said.

“I along with the management and staff of Mohite Patil Vidyalaya met the MHADA chief and demanded for an appropriate place for the school nearby, which they have agreed to. However,we are now awaiting a formal letter from the housing body allotting them the new premises. We have requested MHADA authorities to sanction a place before the school re-opens on June 15,” said Patil.

When contacted a MHADA official said,“We had followed all the rules before demolishing the school. While renting the place to the school,we had clearly mentioned that we can ask them to vacate the place whenever we needed. However, considering the plight of 1,300 students we will try to make some arrangements for the school. We have sought a report from our officials on the status of the new premises to be sanctioned for the school.”
