Cyclone Biparjoy News: By Tuesday evening, over 37,700 people were evacuated from the eight coastal districts of Gujarat that are likely to be worst-hit by Cyclone Biparjoy, and the Army was on standby. Meanwhile, one person was killed after a wall collapsed in the Kharvavad area of Porbandar town due to the high-velocity winds. On Monday, two children were killed in a similar incident in Bhuj, the district headquarters of Kutch. Chairing a meeting to review precautionary measures taken as Cyclone Biparjoy approaches the western coast, Union Home Minister Amit Shah noted the work done by the Centre and state governments over the years in the arena of disaster management. The Home Minister noted, however, that they cannot be content as disasters have changed their forms and their frequency and intensity have increased in recent years. What has IMD said? IMD has said that Cyclone Biparjoy, which is forecasted to cross Saurashtra-Kutch coast near Jakhau Port on the evening of June 15, has "extensive damaging potential" and is likely to impact Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka and Jamnagar districts of Gujarat the most. Cyclone Biparjoy is predicted to as a 'very severe cyclonic storm' with a maximum sustained wind speed of 125-135 kmph gusting to 150 kmph, news agency PTI reported. Further, the cyclone is predicted to enter southwest Rajasthan on June 16, officials informed.
