Two BTech students were arrested for allegedly stealing credit cards and a PAN card from the purse of an Associate Professor at JNUs School of Languages.
The two committed the theft on March 14 and had returned on April 3 to commit another theft, but were spotted by an alert faculty member of the French Languages department, police said.
The two arrested students are pursuing BTech from a private university and are the sons of IIT- Delhi employees.
The victim,Vyjayanti Raghavan from the School of Languages,Literature and Culture Studies told Newsline,On March 14,I stepped out of my third-floor office for just five minutes to make an announcement. When I returned,my office bag was missing. I informed the security and after a frantic search, they found the bag in one of the mens washrooms. The credit cards,PAN card and some cash were missing from the purse.
A few minutes later,Vyjayanti received a text on her phone about one of her credit cards being used for shopping at five different shops in Lajpat Nagar. The card was used to purchase jeans, shoes and goggles by a girl and two youths.
I went to the Lajpat Nagar store and got the CCTV footage from the shopkeeper. On checking the footage,I was surprised that there was a girl along with two boys who had used my credit card. They were not JNU students as no one recognised them in the university. On April 3,they came to our building again, she said.
The two were arrested after being spotted by a faculty member. The youths made the mistake of using the same backpacks as the ones used on an earlier occasion. The backpacks were recognised by a faculty member.
Police said that a case of theft was registered at the Vasant Kunj police station.
