Former deputy director general of Telecom department Runu Ghosh was sentenced to three years rigourous imprisonment on Friday by a court here for amassing disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs 20.94 lakhs.
Special CBI Judge V K Maheshwari ordered confiscation of the illegal wealth amassed by Ghosh as a public servant when she was working under the then Telecom minister Sukhram and imposed a fine of Rs one lakh on the 57-year-old former Indian Audit and Account Services officer.
The court,however,suspended her sentence for a period of two months to file an appeal in the case before the Delhi High Court.
It granted her bail on furnishing a personal and a surety bond of Rs 50,000 each.
The said illegal wealth was acquired during a period from November 1,1992 to August 16,1996 when Ghosh served as an deputy director general of Telecom department.
The Court had earlier on May 12 pronounced Ghosh,57,guilty of possessing the disproportionate assets under the various provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act.
A case was registered against Ghosh on September 13,1996 after CBI conducted searches at her residences on August 16,the day it had recovered Rs 2.45 crore in cash from the then Telecommunication Minister Sukhram’s houses.
Ghosh,a deputy director general (licence and finance) in the Telecom department,was tried under the Prevention of Corruption Act for acquiring huge assets allegedly disproportionate to her known sources of income.
In July,2002,Ghosh,along with Sukhram and Ramarao,MD of a Hyderabad-based firm Advance Radio Masts (ARM) Ltd,was convicted by a Delhi court for causing a loss of over Rs 1.68 crore to the exchequer by awarding a telecom equipment procurement contract to the firm.
Ghosh had filed an appeal,challenging her conviction and sentence of two years prison term and Rs 50,000 fine,which is pending before the Delhi High Court.
The former officer,who was acting as General Manager (Finance) in Ahmedabad,was dismissed from service on November 14,2003 on the basis of a departmental inquiry.
Former Union Communications Minister Sukhram was on February 25 sentenced to three years imprisonment with Rs two lakh fine by a Delhi Court for amassing disproportionate assets worth Rs 4.25 crore during his tenure in P V Narasimha Rao government.
