A total of eight capital punishments and 763 life imprisonments have been awarded by Bihar courts in the first five months of this year,a senior police officer said in Patna on Wednesday.
Of the 5,717 people convicted so far this year,eight got capital punishment,763 got life term and 136 were awarded more than 10 years of imprisonment,Additional Director General of Police (Headquarters) Neelmani said.
Patna,the state capital,topped the conviction list with 534 followed by Nalanda (495),the home district of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
The figures for the other districts are Muzaffarpur (342),Begusarai (279),Buxar (245),Siwan (243) and Darbhanga (212),Neelmani said.
The 34,416 convictions awarded in the state since 2006 included 91 death sentences,6,627 life imprisonments and 1,792 more than 10 years of imprisonment,Neelmani said.
