On January 30, soon after the results were out, the Congress and AAP accused the presiding officer Anil Masih of rigging the polls at the behest of the BJP.With the Punjab and Haryana High Court refusing to grant any interim stay on the Chandigarh mayoral election which was won by the BJP’s Manoj Kumar Sonkar, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Kuldeep Kumar Thursday approached the Supreme Court seeking its urgent intervention in the matter.
Kumar contended in his petition that the HC erred in not granting an interim stay.
“This is not a case of election dispute, but a case of abuse of public office, which destroys the very essence of faith reposed in the officer and is a constitutional wrong and breach of the doctrine of public trust. The case was so egregious that the HC ought to have passed interim orders,” it said and sought stay of the notification that would be issued for appointment of Sonkar as Mayor of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation.
