Justice Yashwant Varma, who is facing an in-house inquiry into the discovery of semi-burnt sacks of Indian currency notes from his Delhi residence following a fire incident on March 14, took oath Saturday as a judge of the Allahabad High Court.
It is learnt that Allahabad HC Chief Justice Arun Bhansali administered the oath in a private ceremony. Appointed as judge in 2014, Justice Varma is currently ninth in seniority in Allahabad HC and has a tenure till January 2031 as a High Court judge. In the Delhi HC, he was third in seniority and a member of the Collegium.
On March 20, the Supreme Court Collegium had recommended Justice Varma’s transfer from the Delhi HC to his parent HC in Allahabad.
The Centre notified the transfer on March 28, days after a three-member judicial panel began its probe into the cash-at-home row.
The Allahabad HC’s Oudh Bar Association, which has been protesting against Justice Varma’s transfer, wrote to Chief Justice Bhansali criticising the “clandestine manner” in which the oath was administered. “We are given to understand that the system is taking every step in fair and transparent manner, but why this oath is not notified to the Bar is a question which again eroded the trust of people in the judicial system,” Bar secretary Vikrant Pandey wrote.
The Bar has also requested that no administrative work be assigned to Justice Varma.
