By Election Result 2024 Highlights: ‘Public sees arrogance in BJP’s politics,’ says Congress after INDIA bloc sweeps bypolls

"Each and every 'karyakarta' was involved in these elections. The people were inspired by the schemes of the PM and the CM that helped us breach this Congress bastion,' Madhya Pradesh Minister Sampatiya Uikey told PTI after BJP's Kamlesh Shah defeated Congress' Dheeran Shah Invati.

On the party's victories in Uttarakhand, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, in a post on 'X', said, "Manglaur was wrested from the BSP and in the face of dirty tactics by the BJP. In Badrinath, the sitting MLA was a Congressman who had switched to the BJP during the Lok Sabha polls. He has been rightly punished by the people and the Congress has held on to the seat." "Both ways the results reflect the changing political climate in the country," he said.

Senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi congratulated Congress and INDIA candidates after the alliance won 10 of 13 seats in the assembly byelections. 

'The people of the country have given their support to the INDIA alliance in the by-elections held on 13 seats in seven states. The people of Devbhumi Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand have expressed their trust in Congress. Many congratulations to all the winning candidates of Congress and India,' she said. 

Targeting the BJP, she said, 'The people of the country have understood that politics that misleads people 100 years back and 100 years ahead will not do any good to the country. The people want positive politics that improves the present and prepares a clear blueprint for a bright future. We are committed to the needs and aspirations of young India.' 

Assembly by-election results 2024: "By-elections were held on 13 Assembly constituencies, and the BJP has been completely wiped out in north, east, west and south. They managed to win just two seats, and that too with a small margin. This shows that people have lost their confidence in the BJP," says Congress leader Pramod Tiwari. PTI

Maintaining its momentum from its triumph in the Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal, the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) swept all four Assembly bypolls in the state Saturday, wresting three seats from the BJP.

The BJP, which saw its Lok Sabha poll tally decline in the state, failed to make a turnaround, as all its candidates lost the bypolls, coming distant second, while the Left-Congress alliance candidates lost their deposits in three of the four seats.

"The byelection results are in favour of the INDIA alliance, and we will win the upcoming Assembly polls in Jharkhand, Maharashtra and Haryana. In Bihar, people are angry with the JD(U) and the RJD. This has created a new political situation in the state, which the Congress needs to understand... Congress, I feel, should form a different alliance (in Bihar)," says Independent MP from Bihar's Purnea Pappu Yadav. 

The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has clinched the high-stakes Jalandhar West Assembly bypoll, retaining the seat with a huge margin. It has come as a shot in the arm to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in the wake of the party’s poor performance in the recent Lok Sabha polls.

The bypoll result saw AAP candidate Mahinder Bhagat trouncing the BJP’s Sheetal Angural by 37,325 votes. Bhagat got 55,246 votes as against Angural’s 17,921 votes and the Congress candidate Surinder Kaur’s 16,757 votes. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)’s Surjeet Kaur came fourth with just 1,242 votes. Bhagat remained ahead in all the 13 rounds of the counting of votes. Read more 

"BJP should change now because the people of the country have given them a clear message that their false promises are no longer acceptable. Wherever elections are held in the country and states, they will have to face defeat. In the Lok Sabha elections, you were limited to 240 seats and not given a full majority, which indicates that in the coming times, the INDIA alliance will flourish and BJP will be wiped out," Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Anand Dubey told PTI.  

"This election should serve as a greater lesson for RJD because, while the INDIA bloc's constituent parties are performing well across the country, RJD has created conditions in Bihar similar to the Lok Sabha elections. In a nail-biting thriller, the ruling BJP finally clinched the Amarwara Assembly by-election in Madhya Pradesh Saturday, defeating the Congress candidate by 3,027 votes.

The BJP’s Kamlesh Shah was trailing in 16 rounds of counting of votes before he made a dramatic comeback in the last five rounds to defeat Congress candidate Dheeran Sah Invati, the son of a local tribal seer Sukhram dada, the chief of Anchalkund Dham. Read More

In a resounding victory, All India Trinamool Congress candidate Supti Pandey won the Maniktala seat by a margin of 62,312 votes, securing 83,110 votes. The Bharatiya Janata Party's Kalyan Chaubey came in second with 20,798 votes, while the CPI(M) candidate Rajib Majumder finished third.

In a decisive victory, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) candidate Anniyur Siva secured 124,053 votes, a massive margin of 67,757 over runner-up Anbumani C. from Pattali Makkal Katchi in Vikravandi. The bye-election saw a total of 20 candidates, with the DMK retaining the seat.

The byelection in Assembly Constituency 33 - Manglaur (Uttarakhand) saw a victory for the Indian National Congress candidate Qazi Mohammad Nizamuddin, who secured 31,727 votes, a gain of 422 votes. The Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Kartar Singh Bhadana came in second with 31,305 votes, a loss of 422 votes. The Bahujan Samaj Party candidate Ubaidur Rahaman (Monty) received 19,559 votes, a loss of 12,168 votes. The Independent candidates Vijay Kumar Kashyap, Deepak Kumar, and Sadia Zaidi received 351, 314, and 206 votes respectively, all with significant losses. The NOTA (None of the Above) option received 237 votes.

The byelection in Assembly Constituency, Badrinath (Uttarakhand) saw a victory for the Indian National Congress candidate Lakhapat Singh Butola, who secured 28,161 votes, a gain of 5,224 votes. The Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Rajendra Singh Bhandari came in second with 22,937 votes, a loss of 5,224 votes. The Independent candidate Naval Kishor Khali received 1,813 votes, a loss of 26,348 votes, while Himmat Singh Negi of the Sainik Samaj Party received 494 votes, a loss of 27,667 votes. The NOTA (None of the Above) option received 823 votes. 

Congress's Lakhpat Singh Butola wins Badrinath bypoll; defeats BJP's Rajendra Bhandari by 5,224 votes

Congress candidate and Himachal Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu's wife Kamlesh Thakur on Saturday held a roadshow after winning the Dehra assembly seat. The grand old party has won the seat for the first time, with Thakur defeating BJP's Hoshyar Singh by a margin of over 9000 votes.

The Congress won the Dehra Assembly seat for the first time on Saturday defeating BJP candidate Hoshiyar Singh by a margin of 9,399 votes.

The Trinamool Congress won the Raiganj, Ranaghat Dakshin and Bagda assembly seats by comfortable margins. The party is leading in Manikatala, with candidate Supti Pandey ahead by a margin of over 41,000 votes.

With ten rounds of counting over for the Manglaur assembly seat, Congress candidate Qazi Mohammad Nizammudin won against BJP's Kartar Singh Dhana by a thin margin of over 400 votes. The grand old party is leading in Badrinath, with candidate Lakhapat Singh Butola ahead by over 5000 votes against BJP's Rajendra Singh Bhandari.

The Amarwara seat in Madhya Pradesh is witnessing a close contest between the BJP and the Congress, with the saffron party candidate Kamlesh Pratap Shah taking a marginal lead after 18 out of 20 rounds of counting was completed. Congress candidate Dheeran Sah is trailing by over 700 votes.

With the counting of votes over for the three assembly constituencies in Himachal Pradesh, the Congress has won two seats while the BJP has secured victory in one. While Himachal Pradesh CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu's wife Kamlesh Thakur won Dehra, Hardeep Singh Bawa won the Nalagarh seat. On the other hand, BJP candidate Ashish Sharma won the Hamirpur constituency.

After the party's victory from the Jalandhar West Assembly seat on Saturday, AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj said that this was proof that the people of Punjab were appreciating Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's work. Bharadwaj said that the party did not have a stronghold in Jalandhar, given that it is an urban area. "Our candidate who contested in 2022, won the election but he resigned and joined BJP. Today, he is in third-fourth place and AAP is winning again," news agency PTI quoted the Delhi minister as saying.

DMK candidate Anniyur Siva has taken a lead of over 35,000 votes in the Vikravandi assembly seat in Tamil Nadu, with nearest rival Anbumani C, of the Pattali Makkal Katchi trailing behind. 

After the completion of all ten rounds of voting, All India Trinamool Congress candidate Krishna Kalyani won the Raiganj assembly seat with more than 85,000 votes, with nearest rival and BJP candidate Manas Kumar Ghosh trailing by over 50,000 votes.

Congress candidate Dheeran Sah Sukharam Das Invati has taken a lead in Madhya Pradesh's Amarwara after 13 rounds of counting were completed. BJP's Kamlesh Pratap Shah is trailing by over 5000 votes.

After the completion of seven out of 12 rounds of counting, JD (U) candidate Kaladhar Prasad Mandal is trailing from Rupauli, with Independent candidate Shankar Singh leading by a margin of more than 1000 votes.

After all nine rounds of countimg were completed, BJP's Ashish Sharma won the Hamipur assembly seat in Himachal Pradesh by over 1500 votes against Congress candidate Dr Pushpinder Verma.

In West Bengal, Trinamool Congress candidates have taken significant leads in all four assembly seats. In Raiganj, party candidate Krishna Kalyani has raked up a massive lead of 47,000 votes. While Supti Pandey is leading by over 23,000 votes in Maniktala, Madhuparna Thakur is ahead by more than 20,000 votes in Bagda. Ranaghat Dakshin candidate Mukut Mani Adhikari is also ahead by over 20,000 votes

After the completion of seven out of 20 rounds of counting, TMC candidate Supti Pandey has taken a significant lead of more than 23,000 votes from the Maniktala assembly seat, with BJP's Kalyan Choubey trailing.

Himachal Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu's wife Kamlesh Thakur is heading towards victory, having gained a lead of more than 7500 votes after nine rounds of counting in Dehra. 

Following the massive victory of party candidate Mohan Bhagat in the Jalandhar West assembly bypolls, the Aam Aadmi Party thanked the voters of Punjab for the mandate. The people of Jalandhar West have stamped their approval on the development work of the Chief Minister @BhagwantMann by making the AAP candidate @mohinderbhagat_victorious with a huge margin," AAP's official handle posted on X. 

The Congress has taken leads in both Uttarakhand seats of Badrinath and Manglaur. Congress' Qazi Nizamuddin is ahead by 7000 votes against BSP's Ubaidur Rahaman in Manglaur, while Lakhapat Singh Butola is leading by over 1000 votes against previous sitting MLA Rajendra Bhandari in Badrinath. 

Janata Dal (United) candidate Kaladhar Prasad Mandal has taken a lead in Bihar's Rupauli after five rounds of counting. His nearest rival, Independent candidate Shankar Singh, is trailing by over 1500 votes.

With Congress candidate and Himachal CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu's wife leading from the Dehra Assembly seat after six rounds of counting, party workers commenced celebrations, news agency PTI reported.

Aam Aadmi Party candidate Mohinder Bhagat has taken a massive lead of over 25,000 votes after nine rounds of counting. With only four rounds remaining, it is likely that Bhagat is heading towards victory in the Jalandhar West assembly bypoll. His nearest rival and Congress candidate Surinder Kaur is trailing with 11,469 votes, and BJP’s Sheetal Angural is lagging with 10,355 votes so far.

The All India Trinamool Congress is leading on all four assembly seats in West Bengal. TMC candidate Krishna Kalyani has taken a significant lead of more than 10000 votes in Raiganj. The TMC is also ahead in the Maniktala, Ranaghat Dakshin and Bagda assembly constituencies.

In the first round of counting for the Jalandhar West assembly seat in Punjab, Aam Aadmi Party candidate Mohinder Bhagat is leading by more than 2000 votes, with Congress's Surinder Kaur trailing. Son of BJP veteran and former three-time MLA Chunni Lal Bhagat, Mohinder joined the AAP last year. He contested the seat in 2017 on a BJP ticket but lost to Sushil Kumar Rinku, the then Congress candidate who defected to the AAP in 2023 and to the BJP before the Lok Sabha polls.

Meanwhile, Kaur has served as a councillor four times and was senior deputy mayor in the Jalandhar Municipal Corporation from 2018 to 2023. She has a consistent record of victories in corporation elections since the late 1990s. For the Congress, winning Jalandhar West is crucial, especially following former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s recent success in the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat. 

Early trends show Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Hoshyar Singh leading by a close margin of over 200 votes from the Dehra assembly seat in the first round of counting, with Congress's Kamlesh Thakur trailing.

Counting begins at the Helncha High School counting centre in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas. Four assembly seats - Maniktala, Bagdah, Ranaghat Dakshin and Raiganj - in the state went to polls on July 10.

Counting of votes for the bypoll for Rupauli assembly seat in Bihar's Purnea district began at 8 am on Saturday, news agency PTI quoted officials as saying. The bypoll for the seat was conducted due to sitting MLA Bima Bharti resigning.  Bharti, who had won the seat on the JD(U) ticket several times, quit the party to contest the Lok Sabha elections on the RJD ticket. Following her loss, she contested the assembly bypolls as an RJD candidate. The JD(U) had fielded Kaladhar Prasad Mandal from the seat. Mandal had contested the 2020 assembly polls from the seat as an Independent. The voter turnout for the assembly bypoll in Rupali on July 10 was recorded at  52.75 per cent.
