BSF and Border Guards Bangladesh join hands to thwart attack by cross-border smugglers in Tripura

Joint efforts prevent assault on BSF personnel in Tripura's Unakoti district even as smugglers attempt to snatch their weapons.

An attack on Border Security Force personnel by cross-border smugglers was thwarted in Tripura’s Unakoti district on Tuesday, officials said, adding that Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) jawans on the other side assisted the BSF personnel in the action.

“BSF jawans on duty in the area intercepted a group of Bangladeshi smugglers trying to smuggle bidi and other contraband items. Upon being ordered to halt, the smugglers tried to attack the jawans with sharp weapons, tried to snatch their arms and abused the security personnel,” a BSF official told indianexpress.com.

The official said that amid the standoff near Magroli in Kailashahar, a group of BGB personnel from the Bangladesh side came near the border fence and helped the Indian forces by putting up a collective effort to thwart the smugglers, who numbered 15-20. After more BSF jawans arrived on the spot, the smugglers ran away.

Local villagers appreciated that the BSF and BGB personnel exercised significant restraint by not shooting at the smugglers.

Non-lethal bullets or rubber bullets are often used along the 856-km-long, partially unfenced international border in Tripura to reduce fatalities and curb crimes.

In April last year, a clash between the BSF and a suspected smuggler at a border outpost in Sonamura in Sepahijala district left one dead and another injured. Earlier, on March 17, a Bangladeshi smuggler was killed in a clash with the BSF at Magroli in Unakoti. Two BSF jawans were also injured in the incident.
