India has a big role to play in climate action and is one of the few countries which has achieved its climate targets submitted during the 2015 Paris climate summit, Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said Tuesday assuming charge of the ministry in the BJP-led NDA government’s third term.

“India is one of those countries that has achieved its quantitative and qualitative targets that were submitted as part of our nationally determined contributions during the Paris climate talks in 2015, whether it is renewable energy targets or carbon emission targets,” Yadav said.

Yadav also held a meeting with the senior most secretaries of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, after completing the formalities. He was joined by the new Minister of State (MoS) colleague Kirtivardhan Singh in the South Block.

Recounting the major initiatives and projects undertaken by the ministry in the previous terms of the BJP government, he said that there will be continuity on these initiatives in the coming term.

Talking about ‘Mission LiFE’ launched during the Glasgow climate conference in 2021, the Union minister said: “Prime Minister had launched during Mission LiFE to propagate an environment friendly lifestyle and tackle the global climate crisis. This mission promotes sustainable development through mindful consumption rather than mindless utilisation.”

Speaking on Project Cheetah, Yadav said that the reintroduction of cheetahs was a significant initiative. “We are satisfied with the progress at Kuno and the cheetah family has grown.”

Yadav also urged all citizens to take part in the recently launched ‘Ek Ped Maa ke Naam‘ (One Tree in Mother’s Name) which the PM launched on Environment Day this year to promote mass tree plantation. “This…will help combat rising temperatures, desertification and challenges facing biological diversity.”
