Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra Highlights: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday is set to address a mega rally in Purnea on the second day of his Bihar leg of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. Bihar CM Nitish Kumar was scheduled to attend earlier along with Lalu Prasad. But now the rally, which will be attended by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and CPI(ML) leader Dipankar Bhattacharya, may see just the RJD founder and his son Tejashwi Prasad Yadav in attendance. Their participation, too, is not guaranteed.

Rahul Gandhi on Monday remained silent on Nitish’s volte-face, instead focusing his speeches on the demand for a nationwide caste census. “No one knows about samajik nyay (social justice) better than Bihar. This country should know how many OBCs, SCs and STs are there. The caste census is necessary. After the caste census, everybody will get to know what is their population and what is their right,” he said addressing a rally in Kishanganj.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Monday said that Bihar CM Nitish Kumar’s abrupt return to the BJP-led NDA was “good riddance” for the opposition INDIA bloc and many leaders were now “heaving a sigh of relief”. “It will not have any impact on the INDIA alliance… absolutely no impact. This is typical of Nitish Kumar. It is not ‘Aaya Ram, Gaya Ram’, it is ‘Aaya Kumar, Gaya Kumar'” he said.

While interacting with farmers in Purnea during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi assured them that if the party was voted to power they would put forward farmer-friendly policies, and also spoke about the UPA government's role in bringing the Land Acquisition Bill 2013.

"I am not speaking empty words here. We had waived off the Rs 72,000 Crores loan of farmers. We had brought the Land Acquisition Bill. When we had our governments in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, we gave the right price (of produce) to farmers. So, we have worked and we will work in the time to come..." he said.

On day 2 of Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Bihar, Rahul to address a rally

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will on Tuesday address his first rally in Bihar ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, seeking to pick up the threads for the opposition INDIA bloc which has been tattered with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's exit.

Gandhi's rally in Purnea district falls on the second day of his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra's march across the state where it made an entry through Kishanganj district and made a night halt at adjoining Araria.

According to Congress legislature party leader in Bihar, the rally will also be addressed by AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge who has also invited other leaders of the opposition INDIA bloc to share the stage.

Also likely to be present is young leader Kanhaiya Kumar, who hails from the state's Begusarai district. (inputs from PTI)

Speaking about seat-sharing arrangement in the INDIA alliance ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said, “What Mamata Banerjee has said is true, we are in INDIA alliance and we will take on BJP as INDIA alliance only. Both TMC and Congress have the goal of defeating the BJP.”

“From Mamata Banerjee's side, she has said that they will contest from 40 seats but when we agree, it is a give and take so all parties need to realise this. We hope that soon we can declare about seat sharing officially..." he said speaking to news agency ANI from Araria in Bihar.

Schedule of the Yatra on Tuesday

The Yatra is set to resume its journey at 8:30 am from Ambedkar Chowk in Araria, Bihar. As part of the Yatra, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will engage in discussions with farmers from Purnea district in the state.

A scheduled morning break is planned for 11:30 am at the Mayfair Ground in Purnea, followed by a public meeting at the Rangbhoomi Maidan in Purnea at 2 pm.

As Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra enters Bihar, Rahul silent on Nitish, Jairam Ramesh says his exit won’t affect INDIA

As Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra entered Bihar through Kishanganj on Monday, a day after Nitish Kumar exited the INDIA bloc, the Congress leader kept silent on the JD(U) chief’s latest U-turn but raised the demand for a caste census.

“No one knows about samajik nyay (social justice) better than Bihar. This country should know how many OBCs, SCs and STs are there. The caste census is necessary. After the caste census, everybody will get to know what is their population and what is their right,” he said addressing a rally.

Gandhi’s silence on Nitish, however, did not restrain other Congress leaders such as Jairam Ramesh and Bihar Congress president Akhilesh Singh.

Ramesh said at a press conference, “There will be no effect on the INDIA alliance even after the exit of Nitish. My question is, Nitish-ji has been asking questions about the caste census. What will happen to that? Will the BJP react on that basis or not?”

Hoping to generate much-needed political momentum to take on the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections barely a couple of months away, senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday began his second yatra in a little over a year, outlining an amorphous vision of building a “harmonious and equitable” society as against what he called the BJP’s politics of “violence, hatred and monopoly”.

Over the next two months, the Manipur-to-Maharashtra yatra will cover 6,713 km, mostly by bus. From Imphal to Mumbai, Gandhi will criss-cross 15 states, passing through 100 Lok Sabha constituencies, before reaching Mumbai on March 20-21. The custom-made Volvo bus has been equipped with a hydraulic lift so that he can address crowds en route.
