The newly elected Narendra Modi government on Friday announced the portfolios, allocating the Ministry of Home Affairs to the Prime Minister’s closest aide and Cabinet debutant Amit Shah while the Defence Ministry to Rajnath Singh.
A statement released by the Rashtrapati Bhawan also announced career diplomat and former foreign secretary S Jaishankar the new minister of External Affairs.
Smriti Irani, the giant-killer from Congress chief Rahul Gandhi’s home turf Amethi, was allocated the Ministry for Women and Child Development and Textiles Ministry. Piyush Goyal, on the other hand, retained the Railway ministry.
Nirmala Sitharaman was allotted the Finance Ministry.
Prakash Javadekar, on the other hand, was allocated the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting as well as Environment.
Nitin Gadkari also retained the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Likewise, Dharmendra Pradhan will also remain the petroleum minister. Ram Vilas Paswan will remain the Consumer Affairs Minister.
Even Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi will remain as the Minister of Minority Affairs.
The Agriculture Ministry was allocated to Narendra Singh Tomar along with Rural Development. Giriraj Singh will take charge of the Ministry of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries.
Ravi Shankar Prasad was given charge of the Ministry of Communications besides retaining his old portfolios of Law and Information and Technology. Former Uttarakhand chief minister Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank was appointed as the Human Resources and Development minister.
Former Karnataka chief minister D. V. Sadananda Gowda will be the new Minister of Chemical and Fertilizers. Jharkhand MP Arjun Munda was assigned the Ministry of Tribal Affairs.
Dr Harsh Vardhan will take charge of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare besides the’ Ministry of Science and Technology, and Earth Sciences
Harsimrat Kaur Badal will remain as the Food Processing minister while Thawar Chand Gehlot Minister was allocated the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
Pralhad Joshi will be the new Parliamentary Affairs Minister and will also get Coal and Mines. Dr Mahendra Nath Pandey was allocated the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.
Arvind Sawant will be the new Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprise. Gajendra Singh Shekhawat was appointed as the Minister of Jal Shakti.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will retain the Department of Personnel and Training, Atomic Energy and Space as well as all important policy issues and portfolios not allocated.
