Over 57% of the 6.98 lakh pending court cases in which the Union government is a litigant pertains to three ministries — Finance, Railways and Defence — according to Law Ministry data given to the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

Replying to a question by BJP MP Neeraj Shekhar on pending cases, Minister of State (independent charge) for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal said the data on pending government litigation was “dynamic and kept changing”. However, he provided the data from Legal Information Management and Briefing System (LIMBS), on which ministries enter their own case details.

As per the LIMBS data on July 19, there were 6,98,904 pending cases in which the government was a litigant. The highest number of pending cases pertained to the Ministry of Finance (1.89 lakh), followed by the Railways (1.14 lakh) and Defence Ministry (95,467). Labour and Employment Ministry had 79,988 pending cases, while the Ministry of Home Affairs had 24,409 cases.

Of the pending government cases, the highest was in tribunals (2.75 lakh), followed by high courts (2.53 lakh). A total of 17,779 cases were pending with the Supreme Court, the reply showed.

“The reduction of pendency in court cases is within the domain of the judiciary as the adjudication of cases is done by the courts. However, the Centre is fully committed to aid the speedy disposal of cases,” the minister said.
