In a peculiar incident, a fully loaded goods train on Sunday morning moved “on its own” from Kathua railway station in Jammu and Kashmir and covered a distance of nearly 80 km until it was stopped in Punjab.
The Railways have ordered an enquiry into the matter, said Division Traffic Manager Pradeep Srivastava, adding that suitable action will be taken once responsibility is fixed.
Sources said that the goods train with 53 bogies was standing at the Kathua railway station waiting for the signal to move towards Punjab. However, around 7.05 am, the train started rolling down on its own towards Punjab and before anybody could act, it gained speed between 60-70 kmph, leaving everybody at Kathua railway station stumped as there was no driver in it, sources said.

Sources said it is possible that the person concerned did not pull the brakes before exiting the cabin. As a result, the train started rolling towards Punjab since the track slopes towards the Pathankote side.
The Railway staff at Ucchi Bassi railway station stopped the train around 8 am by placing wooden blocks on the tracks and reducing its speed.
No damage was reported in the incident, sources said.
