To promote accountability in tax filing, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has made it mandatory to link the Aadhaar with the PAN card. This is important for filing ITR as any failure in compliance may lead to the rejection of the Income Tax Returns.
The CBDT mandated the linking of both, for all individuals who were assigned a PAN as of July 1, 2017. It also announced, 31 December 2025 to be the last date to link the Aadhaar with PAN, for all those who received their PAN card on or before 1 October 2025.
Anyone who has applied for a new Permanent Account Number (PAN) card after July 1, 2025, are required to have an authenticated Aadhaar card for the verification of their PAN card applications. For new applicants, this linking will be done during the application stage, automatically.
Aadhaar can be linked to the PAN card by heading to the Official Income Tax e-filling website https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/. A valid PAN, Aadhaar number and a valid mobile number are required to link your Aadhaar number and PAN.
Step 1: Visit the Income Tax e-filling website and click on ‘Link Aadhaar’ in Quick Links section on the left side of the home page.
Step 2: Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number.
Step 3: Click on ‘Validate’ button.
Step 4: The PAN-Aadhaar linkage request will be forwarded for validation to the UIDAI.
Step 5: If required, the page may ask you for your name and/or phone number for validation via OTP. Key in the inputs as per your Aadhar card and click on submit. It may take 4-5 days to process the Aadhaar-PAN link request.
