Being one of the most important documents in anyone’s possession, the process of applying for a new voter ID can be troublesome for two reasons, i.e., either because of its complex steps or the psychological pressure towards filling out a government application.
Eligibility:
You must be an Indian citizen.
You must be 18 years of age or older (as of January 1st of the year you apply).
You must ordinarily reside in a particular constituency for a minimum period (which varies by state).
Required Documents:
Identity Proof: Aadhaar card, passport, driving licence, PAN card, bank passbook with photograph, etc.
Select your state and choose “New Registration” (form 6).
Fill out the form with details like name, address, date of birth, etc.
Upload scanned copies of the required documents (identity proof, address proof, passport-size photograph).
Submit the application and track its status online.
Offline
Visit the nearest Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) office or designated booth during working hours.
Collect Form 6 and fill it out completely.
Attach self-attested copies of the necessary documents.
Submit the form and documents to the respective officer.
Correction in the existing voter’s ID:
Your voter ID needs to be corrected if there are any inconsistencies with your name, address, birth date, or husband’s or father’s name, as even a small typo can take the chance of casting the ballot away during the elections. Therefore, make sure all the information in your voter ID is accurate.
Required Documents:
Proof of identity: Aadhaar card, PAN card, passport, etc.
Proof of address (ration card, electricity bill, bank statement, etc.).
Proof of a change in name (marriage certificate, gazette notification, etc.).
A change in address within the same constituency requires no documents for correction.
Modes of Correction:
Just like the process of applying for a new voter ID, the process of correction can also be done in both online and offline mode.

Track the status of your application online.

Download Form 8 from the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) website of your state or collect it from your nearest Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) office.
Fill out the form, attach self-attested copies of supporting documents, and submit it to the ERO office.
Collect your acknowledgement slip and track the status with the ERO office.

The process is free of charge.
Processing time varies, usually within 30 days.
You can update your mobile number and email ID during the correction process.
Inform the ERO if you shift residences within the same constituency.
Even though anyone who is 18 years of age or older should be cautious about having acquired or corrected their voter ID before any election scheduled to take place in their constituency, it is advisable to keep it updated regardless of any major upcoming elections.
