The Punjab Police, which had recovered four vehicles of the main cavalcade of Punjab Waris De leader and self-styled preacher Amritpal Singh on March 18 when he was being chased, had also arrested the owner of the ISUZU, an adventure utility vehicle, that was moving along with the Khalistan sympathiser.
Who is the owner of the vehicle and why was he trying to help Amritpal escape? The Indian Express explains.
The owner of it has been identified as 32-year-old Manpreet Singh, who was arrested by the Nawanshahr Police on Monday. He used to run a transport business along with his two elder brothers. The family had around 5-6 tipper trucks that they used to transport sand and gravel. He hails from Anokherwal village in Nawanshar and is married and has a child.
According to his family, Manpreet got baptised around four years ago and used to actively take part in activities wearing the traditional Nihang Sikhs dress. His family said that he was highly influenced by Amritpal and took part in all his Khalsa Vaheer marches last year. He was also one of the organisers in his village in Nawanshahr district, his family said.
He has no criminal records apart from a couple of cases registered against him during the Covid-19 pandemic. One case of Section 188 (disobeidience to the order duly) of IPC is registered against him for staging a dharna during the pandemic and for violating Section 144 of CrPC (prohibits gathering of four and more people ina particular area).
