Made In Heaven Season 2 received less favourable reviews compared to its predecessor and critics majorly blamed the new season’s preachy tone for it. In a recent interview with Mid-Day, the show’s creators Reema Kagti and Zoya Akhtar addressed the question about having a predefined checklist of social issues to tackle in the new season. The creators rejected this notion and instead revealed that many of the stories depicted in the show were inspired by real-life events.

‘It’s not about checklisting evils in our society…’

When Reema was asked if she and other writers had made a checklist of social issues, the filmmaker said, “At the end of the day women empowerment is at the base of what we try to do. We just try to examine a situation and challenge conventions. There is a lot of irony all around us and, more than this kind of checklist if we look at the base of the show, which is about two wedding planners creating these beautiful weddings – one is going through a divorce and the other can’t legally marry. It’s not about checklisting evils in our society, it sounds a very reductionist way of looking at it.”

Zoya interjected, adding her perspective on the show. She remarked, “No, but it’s also a drama. You can’t have a wedding and nothing goes wrong and everybody is happy. That’s so boring.”

‘People connect to it because of its authenticity…’

Reema continued with her take on the show and said, “Let’s say for example the episode where the older couple ran away. We read about it in the newspaper and we thought it was so fun. Even the episode where the girl marries herself was a news report. As writers, we have always drawn from reality and I think that’s why people connect to it, because of its authenticity.”

Made In Heaven Season 2 was released on Amazon Prime Video on August 10. The show stars Arjun Mathur, Sobhita Dhulipala, Jim Sarbh, Kalki Koechlin, Shashank Arora, Shivani Raghuvanshi, Mona Singh, Trinetra Haldar, Ishwar Singh and Vijay Raaz. It is directed by Zoya Akhtar, Alankrita Shrivastava, Neeraj Ghaywan and Nitya Mehra.
