As the countdown to The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 ticks down, the latest teaser has fans debating over Belly and Conrad’s future. Jeremiah’s front-and-bold storyline in the teaser slyly hints at a major shift in Belly’s journey, and probably her romantic interest, as the show introduces a time jump. After a two-year-long wait, Prime Video has finally confirmed the third season of the summer rom-com is arriving on July 16. The third book in Jenny Han’s trilogy, on which the show is based, is flipping a new page in Belly’s life, especially after she chose Jeremiah in the last season. Now, the teaser is packed with subtle clues that Conrad’s return might just shake things up again. From the choice of Taylor Swift songs to that unexpected door scene, there’s a lot more going on than meets the eye.
Fans are again divided between Team Conrad and Team Jeremiah. But it seems like the teaser’s choice of incorporating Taylor Swift’s songs, similar to previous seasons, might be bad news for fans of Jeremiah. The Cruel Summer singer’s music, which always mirrors Belly’s inner feelings and emotional phases, starts with Swift’s “Daylight” as she happily continues to thrive in a seemingly perfect relationship with Jeremiah, dancing, kissing, long drives and swoon-worthy moments. However, the mood shifts dramatically when Conrad appears, and the song transitions to “Red”, which seems to symbolise that she secretly still harbours feelings for him. The abrupt song change, especially after the line “I once believed love would be burning red,” followed by the next shot of her opening the door with Conrad standing there and the lyrics switching to, “But loving him was red,” says a lot about what’s coming.
According to Collider, the upcoming instalment will follow the exact storyline as written in the original novel. A brief scene shows Belly and Conrad unexpectedly meeting at the Cousins Beach house during Christmas (the last door scene). The clip is actually a flashback from We’ll Always Have Summer, set around six months before the main events. According to the book, this is the exact time when Belly realises her unresolved feelings for Conrad.
In the teaser, when Belly is with Jeremiah, the whole time she looks happy, seems comfortable and in love, but never once is she seen wearing anything other than light colours. It’s mostly beige, blue, or similar shades. However, the moment she meets Conrad, Belly is seen in a red dress. The colour red usually stands for passion and love, maybe hinting at her unresolved feelings for Conrad. This little visual detail lines up perfectly with the song switching to “Red.”
The Fisher brothers are two ends of the same thread. One suffers quietly, the other is loud, but they’re tied by the same grief for their mom (Susannah died in season 2) and the same love for Belly. That push and pull has been done pretty well so far in The Summer I Turned Pretty. Conrad’s deep, intense love is his strength, but the wall he builds around himself can get in the way. Meanwhile, Jeremiah’s sunshine energy is out in the open, and so are his feelings for Belly. But this time, the silence could be a game changer for Conrad. This time, he ended up saying more than anything Jeremiah ever could. One of the most powerful bits in the teaser is that short silence right after Conrad says “Hi”. It’s barely a second, but it lingers.
Just when it felt like things were finally settling, with the teaser setting the tone for a perfect happily-ever-after for Belly and Conrad, author Jenny Han, speaking to Entertainment Weekly, dropped a little warning. “There are the things they know and then there are things they think they know,” she said. So yeah, things might not play out exactly like in the book. With the time jump, every character has changed. Han hinted that while the titular characters will share some big moments, they’ll also be rediscovering themselves, seeing how much they’ve grown and asking, ‘Who are they now?’ It’s not just the same old love triangle anymore. Earlier, a few photos from the upcoming instalment were released, including one where Conrad is seen hanging out at the beach with Belly, Jeremiah, Steven, and Taylor. Jenny clarified that the moment is actually a flashback, not from the current timeline, so yes, there is going to be a lot of back-and-forth.
The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 starts streaming from July 16.
