When Netflix dropped the first season of the Korean series Squid Game in the middle of the pandemic in 2021, the show became a runaway global hit in less than a week’s time. While the second season of the show is still awaited, Netflix has dropped the teaser of a reality show where 456 people will be competing for the prize money of $4.56 million. The show will have them competing in the challenges shown in Squid Game.
Netizens were quite baffled by Squid Game: The Challenge as many of them questioned if Netflix even understood the point of the show. One user wrote, “I think y’all did not watch the show in the first place.” Another user wrote, “Netflix did not understand the whole point of the show?” Some fans of the show also wondered if this was a way to set up the second season whilst also complaining that they would rather prefer the next season. “This should lead directly into Squid Game Season 2 with whoever wins or loses or both,” wrote one fan. Another fan wrote, “I think we would prefer season 2 than a reality show.”
In June, Netflix announced that new cast members will be joining Squid Game Season 2 along with recurring cast members. Lee Jung-jae, Wi Ha-joon, Gong Yoo, and Lee Byung-hun will be reprising their roles from the first season. The second season’s release date is yet to be announced.
Squid Game, the fictional show, had characters competing for a big cash prize after engaging in games that could lead to their death. After a series of Hunger Games-like adventures, only one emerged as the winner.
