Actors Jitendra Kumar, Neena Gupta and Raghubir Yadav‘s much-loved series, Panchayat, recently returned with its third season on Amazon Prime Video. While Panchayat 3 plays to positive reviews, fans are already anticipating the next season. Meanwhile, conspiracy theories around Panchayat writer Chandan Kumar charging a whopping Rs 5 crore have been doing the rounds on the internet. Refuting the rumours, Chandan, who has also written Humorously Yours, and F.A.T.H.E.R.S, said that there’s no truth to these claims.
“Ismein koi sacchai nahin hai (There is no truth to these rumours). These are just conspiracy theories. Pata nahin yeh kaun si theory hai. Bhagwan kae yeh sach ho jaye (I don’t know where these rumours started. I wish they turn out to be true,” Chandan told Digital Commentary in a recent interview.
Addressing another rumour about him getting offers from Yash Raj Studios and receiving a call from Aamir Khan, he said, “Aamir Khan se direct call nahin ayaa. Production house se calls aajate hain (I didn’t get a call from Aamir Khan but I do receive calls from production houses). Meetings and discussions happen. Even I want to collaborate, so whenever I get a call, I pitch the stories. The gap between pitching the script and things materialising is big.”
The debate around writers not getting their monetary due refuses to die down. Reacting to this, Chandan said, “If you do good work, you get paid. Otherwise, how can one survive in a city like Mumbai? Your income depends on your position and designation. You get to meet a lot of writers at Screenwriters Association events.”
Decoding the salaries of writers, he added that the range is diverse. “If you get yourself associated with a studio, you will be paid a certain amount. Similarly, if you are starting out as an independent writer and pitching stories to makers on an individual level, then your salary will differ. How much you’re being paid also depends on how strong your story is and how much you can convince them. It can start from Rs 10 lakh and can go up to any amount depending on various factors,” he explained.
