After five years, the second season of the popular Prime Video web series Paatal Lok is here. The show first premiered during the pandemic in 2020 and was an instant hit. Starring Jaideep Ahlawat and Ishwak Singh in pivotal roles, the show was created by Sudip Sharma and was set in Delhi, and showed a world where the criminal underbelly co-exists with the affluent society. Now, the streaming platform has released a teaser for the second season and while it doesn’t give anything away about the show, it certainly sets the mood for the return of Hathiram Chaudhary (played by Jaideep).
The new teaser features Jaideep talking about the pests that have infected the society and how when one man kills one insect, he is celebrated by the society. He then proceeds to tell the story of the same man who becomes complacent after killing one insect, and is then attacked by countless pests. The teaser ends with Hathiram saying, “Use kya laga tha, ek keede ko maar dia toh khel khatam. Aisa thode hota hai Paatal Lok? (What did he think? Killing one pest is enough? That’s not how Paatal Lok works).’
The new season of the show starts streaming on Prime Video from January 17, and also stars Tillotama Shome and Gul Panag. Gul played Haithram’s wife in the first season but Tillotama is the new face in the show.
In an earlier chat with SCREEN, Jaideep had revealed that creator Sudip Sharma has “created a new world” for the second season and was not trying to “cash in on all the elements that worked” previously. “It is so good that you would be left wondering how long will it take to write something like this, how much a writer can push oneself. I hope the story reaches the audience and they like it,” he said and added, “In a series format, when your previous season is a hit, sometimes people try to cash in on all the elements that worked. But Sudip has left all that behind and created a new world. I just hope people get that. It is a new way of telling the story. I am confident people will have a lot of fun watching it.”
