SonyLIV dropped the trailer of its upcoming crime thriller KanKhajura on Wednesday. An Indian adaptation of the 2019 British show Magpie, it stars Roshan Mathew, Mohit Raina, and Sarah Jane Dias among others. The trailer depicts Raina and Mathew as brothers in Goa, who have a mysterious dark past.

The trailer starts with Raina’s character raising a toast to Mathew’s at an intimate get-together. “Today, my brother Aashu has come back home after serving 14 years in prison,” Raina’s character Max says in Hindi. “He had to go to jail at an age when he should be partying, unfortunately. The party of Ashu’s life starts tonight. To Ashu’s freedom, cheers!,” he adds.

However, Ashu and other characters look more concerned and suspicious than happy, as opposed to Raina. From the voiceovers of the members of Max’s gang, we learn that Ashu was “the joker of the gang.” He even tells Dias, who plays Max’s wife, that the gang used to thrust his face underwater in order to make him tougher. “He always told me, ‘No need to fear, Max is here,” says Ashu, with his signature stutter.

Later, we see Max pull Ashu by his collar, and issue a warning, “Don’t talk to anyone in my family or my business. You’re my brother, talk to me.” We then see shots of Ashu getting beaten up badly. But soon, we see a new shade of him as his crying face makes way for a sinister smile. The voiceover claims he’s as dangerous as he’s innocent.

We then see glimpses of Ashu unleash himself, getting both physically and verbally violent. “He’s actually a twisted demon,” says another voiceover at the end. The show is named after an insect which gets under the skin and crawls there, causing immense pain. The tagline also reiterates that: “So fragile… yet so fatal.”

We also see a glimpse of Trinetra Haldhar Gummaraju, who made her acting debut as Meher in season 2 of Made in Heaven in 2023. She plays Mathew’s love interest in the show. KanKhajura is directed by Chandan Arora, best known for helming Main, Meri Patni Aur Woh (2005).

Sarah Jane Dias, who plays Nisha, said “There’s something deeply unsettling about KanKhajura, not just the story, but what it forces you to confront- guilt, family, and memory. Nisha is a character who’s trying to hold it all together while everything inside her is falling apart. It wasn’t easy to play a character that is so nuanced and layered, but it was empowering.”
