Black Warrant teaser: Vikramaditya Motwane’s web show explores real stories from ‘India’s most unforgiving prison’

After the success of his previous projects Sacred Games and CTRL, filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane is back with a gripping new web series, Black Warrant, which explores the complexities of Tihar Jail through the perspective of jailer Sunil Gupta (played by Zahan Kapoor). The series is based on the book Black Warrant by Sunil Gupta, the former superintendent of Tihar Jail. The makers unveiled the teaser on Thursday.

The teaser begins with a young and eager Sunil Gupta, brimming with enthusiasm as he prepares to join Tihar Jail as a policeman. However, he is cautioned that a jailer needs to be tall and bulky to assert authority in front of hardened criminals. His lean frame, he is told, might make him vulnerable in an environment where survival is a challenge. The series offers a compelling and morally charged journey through Asia’s largest prison, Tihar, as seen through the eyes of rookie jailer Sunil Gupta, who confronts some of India’s most infamous offenders.

The teaser also gives a glimpse into Sunil’s time in the jail, revealing ‘real events from India’s most unforgiving prison.’ Viewers are introduced to Rahul Bhat, portraying a cop who bluntly refers to the jail as a “circus,” and Sidhant Gupta in a key role.

Black Warrant is created by Vikramaditya Motwane and Satyanshu Singh, who also share directorial duties with Ambiecka Pandit, Arkesh Ajay, and Rohin Raveendran Nair.

Reflecting on the adaptation, Vikramaditya Motwane previously shared, “Black Warrant is a book that is raw, intense, and authentic and immediately demands to be brought to life. Collaborating with Netflix, Applause Entertainment, and Confluence has been incredible, and I’m grateful to have had partners who have supported me and the team in telling this story the way it deserves to be told.”

Black Warrant is set to release on Netflix on January 10.
