Aryan Khan would act out even the female characters in our voices, says Sahher Bambba: ‘I’m waiting to see him perform on screen’

Sahher Bambba feels Aryan Khan "will become an actor" like his father Shah Rukh Khan, given how well he directs his actors on set and how well he knew all his characters in his directorial debut The Ba***ds of Bollywood.

Shah Rukh Khan’s elder son Aryan Khan shocked everyone when he announced his decision to not debut as an actor, but instead make his directorial debut with the Netflix show The Ba***ds of Bollywood. But all the cast members of that show, including Bobby Deol and Manoj Pahwa, have vouched for his acting skills. Now, Sahher Bambba, who plays Karishma Talwar in the series, also opens up on how great an actor Aryan is.

“Aryan, despite coming from the family that he does, if you ask him to play a mountaineer or a village, he’ll ace it. You’ve to see him perform like we did. He’s very, very good as an actor,” Sahher tells SCREEN in an exclusive interview. “I keep telling him, ‘Please, I’m waiting for you to perform as an actor on screen.’ He’d enact all the characters, including us women, he’d act us out in our voices,” she adds.

So, is it the burden of his father’s superstardom that’s stopping him from becoming an actor? Or is it the harsh response to his sister Suhana Khan’s acting debut in Zoya Akhtar’s period coming-of-age musical The Archies, which also dropped on Netflix India a couple of years ago? What’s really stopping him? All Sahher says is: “He’s too good. I think he should become an actor. I think he will. I really hope he does.”

She also lauds how Aryan’s North Indian upbringing has helped him connect with India at large through his show. “I’ve interacted with certain star kids. It’s not their fault, but since they’re living in such a cocooned and sheltered life, they don’t know what the issues are across small towns and villages of India, and how a person from those areas would respond to those issues,” she argues.

Sahher made her debut opposite Karan Deol, son of Sunny Deol, in the latter’s 2019 directorial and romantic drama Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas, which didn’t perform as per expectations at the box office. In an earlier interview with SCREEN, Sahher pointed out that unlike other star kids, Aryan has a great command over Hindi, which aids his directorial process.

Her The Ba***ds of Bollywood co-star Raghav Juyal also agreed and added, “Even when I’ve visited their home, I’ve seen Gauri (Khan, mother) say, “Arey jaldi, khana kha lo yaar.” Even when the bua calls up from Delhi, she asks, “Ki haal hai? Aryan da show aa raha hai na.” There’s that Punjabi culture at home, which I really like. They may speak to everyone else in English, but back home, among themselves, they’re so Indian and so rooted.”

“His cousins are also from all over the country, like from Dehradun. That’s why he knows the pulse of Hindustan. He knows he’s making the show for Hindustan, not for Soho House. That’s very important. I found it very surprising, and was fairly impressed by it,” added Raghav. The Ba***ds of Bollywood is co-written by Aryan, Bilal Siddiqi, and Manav Chauhan.
