Films that are marketed as multilingual or bilingual most often end up being just dubbed films, and even SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali faced such criticism upon release. However, Naga Chaitanya promises that his upcoming film Custody, directed by Venkat Prabhu, is a true-blue Telugu-Tamil bilingual and every shot was made in both languages.

“The best thing about Custody is that it was shot in both the languages–Tamil and Telugu. Every single shot was shot twice. Once in Telugu and again in Tamil. I thank the producer for giving us that freedom to do it,” Chaitanya said in a media interaction in Hyderabad.

And speaking Tamil was not hard for Naga Chaitanya, according to the film’s director Venkat Prabhu. “When we first started the shoot, his Tamil was really bad, but he kept interacting with my assistants in Tamil. It was all there because he did all the schooling and college in Chennai. So, he had to brush it up. He is now really good at it.”

When Naga Chaitanya was asked why he had chosen to do a film with a Tamil director, he said, “It is time for cross-border collaborations. Tamil directors are doing films here, and our directors are working there. Kannada filmmakers are working here. The language barrier doesn’t exist anymore.”

During the interaction, Chay also agreed that he has disappointed fans in the past few films, but assures that Custody will be a turning point in his career as it has a unique story. His last film Thank You bombed at the box office and the same happened to his brother Akhil with his latest release The Agent. Chaitanya said that highs and lows are normal in a career. “We always strive to give good films to fans. For fans’ support and unconditional love, all we could do is give good cinema. The last few releases didn’t work as we expected. Highs and lows are very normal in this career. That time will pass soon and we will be back for sure,” Chaitanya said.

Talking about the story of Custody, director Venkat Prabhu said, “It is about a hero who has to make sure that the villain doesn’t die. Usually, a hero wants the villain dead, but here he has to protect him at all costs. How he can do that is what Custody is about. The film is about what happens in 48 hours.”

Other than Naga Chaitanya, the film also has Keerthy Shetty, Arvind Swami, Sarathkumar, and Priyamani in prominent roles. It has music by Yuvan Shankar Raja and Ilaiyaraaja. Custody will be released on May 12.
