Telugu star Nani and Mrunal Thakur‘s romantic drama, Hi Nanna, has received largely positive reviews and is bringing audiences to theatres. The film, directed by Shouryuv, has performed well on its opening day and according to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film eared Rs 6.10 crore on Thursday, the day of its release.

Hi Nanna was initially scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on December 21, however, the makers brought forward its release date to December 7 to avoid clashing with Prabhas’ epic action thriller film Salaar, directed by KGF fame Prastanth Neel. The decision seems to have proved to be a wise move as no other major Telugu films have released this week and the film will enjoy a free run at the box office, extending into next week also.

Given the film has received positive reviews by film critics and is getting a lot of love from the audiences, the film’s earning will grow over the weekend. Hi Nanna, on Thursday, witnessed 43.75 percent Telugu occupancy with most catching the film’s evening and night shows. Hyderabad recorded an occupancy of 50 percent, and Bangalore had a 50 percent occupancy, even with parts of Tamil Nadu being hit by Cyclone Michaung, the state registered an occupancy of 47.75 percent.

Hi Nanna is Nani’s second film this year after delivering a smashing hit Dasara, whereas it is Mrunal Thakur’s second Telugu film after the success of Sita Raman with Dulquer Salmaan. Recently, in an interview with 123telugu.com, the actor said, “After Sita Ramam, the audience wanted to see me in diverse roles. I focused on roles that are close to my heart. Hi Nanna has a beautiful story. I believe audiences will fall in love with the characters of Viraj and Yashna.”

In their review of Hi Nanna, Indianexpress’ Raghu Bandi called the Nani and Mrunal Thakur film “a high-emotion drama that will remind you of actor’s Jersey.” He wrote, “After a massy, hard hitting Dasara, Nani chose a family-centric love story ‘Hi Nanna’, with a debutant director at the helm. After leaving a lasting impression on Telugu audiences as Sita in last year’s Sitaramam, Mrunal Thakur returns with Hi Nanna. With music by Hesham Abdul Wahab, who has already impressed with Kushi earlier this year, the film is a drama meant to bring family audiences to theatres.”
