Actor Sunil Lahri, who played the role of Laxman in Ramanand Sagar’s iconic show Ramayan, has not been invited to the Ayodhya Ram temple inauguration. However, Sunil’s Ramayan co-stars Arun Govil and Dipika Chikhlia, who played Ram and Sita, respectively, have been extended the invitation.
In an interview with Etimes, Sunil wondered why he was not invited to the event, but also said that it didn’t upset him. The actor said that if someone has organised a function, one doesn’t need to get invited every time. However, he does feel that he would have felt good about getting the chance to be part of a moment that would go down in history.
The inauguration ceremony is set to take place in January next year.
Further contemplating the reasons why he was left out, Sunil Lahri said that the organisers possibly didn’t feel his character of Laxman was important enough to be invited, or maybe they didn’t like him personally. Sunil was also surprised that no one from the crew of the show Ramayan was invited for the event.
In an earlier interview with IANS, Sunil had shared his experience of playing the role of Laxman. He said, “When I was shooting for Ramayan, I didn’t have any reference from the past for the character of Laxman and whatever little I have managed to do, it is because of the guidance of Sagar Saab (Ramanand Sagar). The credit goes to him and the writers of the television serial.”
Ramayan originally aired between 1987 and 1988 on Doordarshan. Actors like Arvind Trivedi, Dara Singh and Bal Dhuri were also part of the show.
