Ekta Kapoor’s Kasautii Zindagi Ka made actress Shweta Tiwaria household name. During an exclusive conversation with SCREEN, Shweta revisited the story behind her casting. She revealed that Ekta played a prank on her before offering her the part.
Shweta shared, “I had done a show called Aane Wala Pal, and Ekta had watched it. She didn’t take formal auditions, but she gave me different shows. She gave me Kaleerein where I played a timid bahu. Then she gave me Karam Apna Apna which was out and out negative. Then she gave me Kahin Kisi Roz, where I played a snobbish girl. She saw me in those roles for the entire week. Next week, she called saying that I come late on sets.”
The actress added, “Palak was born at that time, so I would reach late on set. One day she said, ‘Call Shweta to my cabin, I want to take her case as this is not done. She cannot come late on my sets.’ I was so scared to go and meet her after the pack-up. It was around 9:30-10 pm and she was sitting on a sofa. I was scared because I was new. She said, ‘I have heard you come late on my sets. What do you think? We will wait for you?’ Later, she started laughing and said she wanted to offer me Kasautii Zindagi Kay. She said, ‘Prerna is my dream. I want you to play that.’ She asked me if I’d be able to do it and not be late. That’s how she offered me that role. For a few months, I couldn’t realize if what happened there was true or was she just pulling my my leg. After that for a month, there was no conversation about Kasautii. Then, they suddenly called me for a look test. I did a small audition on the Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi set.”

To date, Shweta Tiwari is thankful to Ekta Kapoor for the show. Shweta said, “Kausautii was one show that made me, it shaped my personality. Today, whatever I am, I owe it to Kasautii Zindagi Kay. I thank Ekta and Shobha Kapoor for giving me this chance when even I didn’t know I was talented. They saw something in me that even I didn’t know. Even when I did Kasautii, I never stuck to a particular image. I would do reality shows when people used to not go and do it. Today, people make contracts for 3 years barring you from doing anything else if you are doing one show, but Ekta had not done that with me.”
She added, “She (Ekta) had given me the freedom that as far as the telecast was sorted, you could do whatever you wanted. So in those days, I did a Punjabi film, Bhojpuri films, reality shows, everything. Because I kept changing, I wasn’t tied down to one place. People have not just seen me as a bahu, but also in a sexy, naughty avatar and I didn’t let any stereotype come to me. Which is why my change didn’t negatively affect people. Otherwise, when people see you in one type of role and then you try to change it, the audience doesn’t accept it.”
Shweta Tiwari also revealed a heartwarming incident she faced during Kausatii Zindagi Kay. “Once an elderly woman came home crying. I had just woken up. She said, ‘I don’t like to see you getting tortured by Komolika. I pray to god she stops doing so.’ I just laughed and told her all of it is just acting. But there are so many sweet memories that will remain in my core always.”
