Shark Tank IndiaSeason 3 has been grabbing a lot of attention. The judges on the show also have been in the news for various reasons, but still, at its core, the show remains a platform giving opportunities to start-up founders to put their brand on the map. Recently, during the campus special episode two such founders who had the Sharks competing with each other were Avik Chaudhery and Gaurang Gadia. Avik and Gaurang brought a beverage brand on the show asking for Rs 35 Lakhs for 4 percent of equity. After lots of discussions, they received offers from all five sharks, but eventually locked the deal with Anupam Mittal and Aman Guptafor an investment of Rs 35 Lakhs for 6 percent equity.
Having an interesting pitch, Avik and Gaurang spoke to Indianexpress.com sharing their experience and revealing why they chose to go with Aman and Anupam, despite having the same offers from Ritesh Agarwal, Namita Thapar, and Amit Jain. The student entrepreneurs shared how they liked Anupam grilling them and also how the show has impacted their sales.
Talking about locking the deal with Anupam and Aman, Gaurang said, “We wanted to optimize this opportunity to the fullest. In the Tank, you go with your gut feeling, and that was very strongly inclined towards Anupam and Aman. We seem to have divided the internet with which deal we should have gone with, but the audiences get to see just 20 minutes, we are there for an hour or more. The momentum there made us feel that Anupam and Aman would be pretty good because Anupam was at it, he was grilling us at first, and we liked that, it felt he wanted to do something in this category.”
Avik also added, “We went there to raise money and not just do marketing. Inside the tank, Anupam and Aman’s combination made more sense to us. We countered for all 5 sharks actually and it would have been great to have them on board, the reason why we chose Anupam and Aman was because Anupam was very much into the business. He was so engaged and gave some actionable points that stuck with us. We really liked their idea to build our brand with a consumer-first approach and then find the right channel. Anupam convinced Aman so we could see the partnership beginning right there. Ritesh would have been really good from a B2B sense, Namita also has a big distribution, but that only comes gradually.”
While Gaurang mentioned that there is no pressure as such from home, they also revealed how distant family and friends kept asking them when would they appear on Shark Tank India, so featuring on the episode was like ‘life coming full circle for them.’ Talking about the special preparations they did to appear on the show, Avik revealed, “Special preparations do go in, you have to be very clear with your brand strategy, and everyone has to be on the same page. There were times when to face our fears we kept the Sharks photos in front and prepared.”
Sharing how life has changed after Shark Tank India, Avik added, “We are still the Delhi boys we used to be, but life has changed for the good in terms of the orders we are getting. The Shar Tank effect for the orders has been pretty amazing, they have been piling up. So, we are very happy with the outcome.”
In conclusion, Gaurang also added, “A startup is a collection of many failures and one or two successes that get compounded in the long term. If we had fumbled at any point the trajectory of the pitch could have been very different.”
