After a successful career on television, Prachee Shah Paandya is now eyeing the OTT space. The actor has been shifting gears, working on a few films, the latest being Chhatriwali on ZEE5. In a chat with indianexpress.com, the actor shared that the journey has been a ‘rewarding one’ for her. After working on TV and films, she added that with OTT becoming so big in recent years, she is looking forward to grabbing some good roles in the coming days.

“It has been a long, long journey. I started in TV when I was just 19 years, post which I shifted to films. There wasn’t any digital medium then and thus the switch was a different one, with many ups and downs. I have worked on some very successful commercial films like ABCD 2, Judwaa 2 and Mulk. I got to work with actors like Rishi Kapoor. I am just happy that I got to do these varied roles and now with OTT coming in, I am waiting to grab some good offers. Today, most of my films are on OTT and it makes you realise how huge its reach is. Of course, seeing yourself on the big screen is overwhelming but it’s also a wonderful feeling when people around the world tell me they have watched my films.”

Given the actor has been away from television for a long time, we wondered if producers have been still calling her. “They do, but the calls have reduced a bit,” she shared, adding that people have taken for granted that she will not do TV again. Prachee added, “Through this interview, I want to send out the message that I am open to doing shows if it’s a central part and also progressive in nature. Honestly, we need to understand that the reach of television is phenomenal. And now that it’s competing with OTT and films, the content needs to be updated. But I have never looked down on the medium. It has given me an identity. I am all geared up and waiting for the right offers.”

Talking about her latest project Chhatriwali, the actor said that she was grateful that filmmakers have become courageous to pick up such sensitive subjects. Calling sex education still a taboo in society, Prachee added that she was overwhelmed with the kind of feedback the film received from all quarters. “I was amazed that someone is attempting it. I am thankful that I got to represent the Indian women out there, who face the same issues. They cannot talk about it owing to societal pressure. I had my doubts about how the film would be put together and was so happy with the way the subject has been handled.”

The actor went on to share how she watched the film with her 14-year-old daughter and was happy the film left an impact on her. Prachee shared, “They have sex education workshops in school and I think today’s generation, they are already so well read about these topics. They also have a strong peer system and are more comfortable talking with them than with their parents.  We, of course, try to bridge the gap and when she came out watching the film, whatever doubts she had about abortion, condoms and even contraceptives, were cleared. And as she is very close to her father, they too sat and had a conversation. They are a generation who will think and talk and I am glad that at least there is a conversation happening around this.”

Starring Rakul Preet Singh, Sumeet Vyas and Riva Arora, Chhatriwali is streaming on ZEE5.
