In a recent episode, Big B, while discussing a question opened up about the popular song “Mere angne mein” from Laawaris, and how he was asked by director Prakash Mehra to sing it.
As soon as he put across, the audio question, and the song played, BigB looked visibly embarrassed. He even looked angrily towards the computer gesturing why they included this question in the game. He then asked the question, “Which of these is true for the song in the audio?”. As the song kept playing, the host exclaimed, “Hey bhagwan, that’s enough! Please stop playing the song. I don’t know why… I now wonder what options would computer ji put up now,” he said.
The options were the director is the singer, the actor is the singer, the actor is the director and the composer is the director. As the contestant quickly picked the right one — ‘the actor is the singer’, Big B laughed, “The actor is the singer, and what a bad singer.”

The legendary star then went on to narrate how his father Harivansh Rai Bachchan used to sing the song during Holi at home. Amitabh Bachchan stated that it’s a folk song that he’s been hearing since childhood. “My father used to play the drum and sing this song on Holi. This film (Laawaris) was made by director Prakash Mehra. He also made Zanjeer. He came up to me one day and said, ‘Hey, Amit, give me this song’. I asked him what he meant by that. He then explained that he wanted to use the song in his film, and I said ‘Sure, why not!’ He then said, ‘You will have to sing it. I told him, I can’t. Phate huye baans jaise, I am a very bad singer. I cannot sing. But he was persistent that I sing it the way I do at home. That’s how it was included and I sang it with great difficulty,” he recalled.
As Amitabh Bachchan finished his story, the studio audience started cheering him to sing again. “Nahi bhai, no singing,” he sternly said and continued with the game.
In the song, as readers may know, Big B took many avatars, and even cross dressed as a woman. Laawaris was released in 1981 and also starred Zeenat Aman, Rakhee and Amjad Khan.
