An 11-year-old boy sustained burns after attempting a martial arts stunt at an event celebrating Tamil actor and politician Vijay’s birthday in Chennai’s Neelankarai neighborhood on Saturday. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media.
In the clip, the boy is seen trying to break a stack of tiles set on fire with his hands. The stunt turned dangerous when the fire caught his hand, causing him to panic. As he frantically shook his hand to extinguish the flames, the stage also caught fire. Bystanders quickly jumped on stage to help douse the fire.
According to The News Minute, Sub Inspector Balu of Neelankarai J8 police station said that the boy sustained 3 per cent to 5 per cent burns on his right hand. However, no action will be taken against the event organisers at the request of the child’s family.
It’s important to note that the event was held despite Vijay asking his fans and Tamil Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) cadres not to celebrate his 50th birthday, out of respect for the more than fifty people who lost their lives in the Kallakurichi illicit liquor tragedy.
Vijay tweeted from the official account of his newly formed political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, and wrote in Tamil, “The news of the death of more than 25 people after consuming fake liquor in Karunapuram area of Kallakurichi district is shocking and heartbreaking. I offer my deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and pray to God for the speedy recovery of those undergoing treatment.”
