In 2018, actor Sivakumar, father of Tamil stars Suriya and Karthi, received flak for throwing away the mobile of a fan trying to click a selfie with him. The video of the act went viral on social media, which put the veteran actor in a bad light. The former actor is yet again finding himself in a similar spot. Sivakumar attended politician Pala Karuppiah’s book launch and while leaving the stage, a person tried to honour the actor by draping a shawl over his shoulders. Sivakumar forced the shawl out of the person’s hand and threw it away, which has received severe criticism online.

Many regional media houses shared the video and criticized Sivakumar’s act and claimed that he hasn’t changed even after the 2018 incident. However, it turns out that the person, named Karim, was a friend of Sivakumar for the past 58 years. Sivakumar was only friendly when he threw away the shawl as he didn’t like his friend treating him as a celebrity.

Writer and journalist Ka Su Velaayuthan, who is a friend of both Sivakumar and Karim, took to Facebook to slam the misconstrued reports. He claimed Sivakumar and Karim have been friends for the past 58 years, and the actor has attended all the important family functions of Karim. Velaayuthan also shared the link to Sivakumar’s article on The Hindu, where he has written about Karim. The post also had photos of Sivakumar with the family of Karim.

Karim’s grandson Rifoy Jainulabideen also came out in support of Sivakumar. Commenting under a media report on Facebook against Sivakumar, Rifoy wrote, “The old man in the video is my grandfather. Sivakumar and him have been friends for over 50 years. I spoke to my grandpa, and he said Sivakumar was friendly with him while throwing away the shawl. He said, ‘Why are you doing all this to me? Come let’s go.'” Rifoy concluded, “Kindly don’t spread false news without knowing the truth.”

Fans of Karthi and Suriya have lashed out at media houses and similar posts that have misinterpreted the incident.
