Ideally, 2025 should have started with Ajith Kumar-Magizh Thirumeni’s Vidaamuyarchi hitting the screens for Pongal. The film’s teaser said so. Lyca Productions, the producers of this film, said so. Everyone believed it, and release plans for many other films were adjusted around this big-ticket film. However, on New Year’s Day, just ten days before the expected release of Vidaamuyarchi, the makers revealed the movie would miss out on the Pongal race. However, two days after Pongal, they have given a reason for renewed festivities for Ajith fans by releasing the film’s trailer, and announcing the release date of the movie. Now, the film, which also stars Trisha, Arjun, Arav and Regina Cassandra in pivotal roles, will hit the screens on February 6.

While the teaser was without any dialogues, and just accompanied by the score of Anirudh Ravichander, things are a bit different now in the trailer. We have talkie portions included, and Vidaamuyarchi, with pristine and rich visuals by Om Prakash, promises to be a gritty action drama devoid of overly masala sensibilities. There is a crumbling marriage between Ajith and Trisha’s characters, and a shift to Azerbaijan to see if things get better… But destiny has other plans.

We also see the various players of Vidaamuyarchi, which is reportedly based on the 1997 English film, Breakdown. As expected from a Magizh Thirumeni film, Vidaamuyarchi has racy action sequences, powerful yet minimal punchlines, and an international feel to the proceedings.

Here’s the trailer:

With the revised date being announced as February 6, the release plans for February films might be in for an overhaul. Already, it was speculated that Dhanush’s Nilavuku Enmel Enadi Kobam would hit the screens the same day or a week later for Valentine’s Day. Incidentally, Pradeep Ranganathan’s next, Dragon, helmed by Ashwath Marimuthu of Oh My Kadavule-fame, has already booked the same day for its release.

So, it will now be interesting to see if there is any reshuffle that happens to accommodate Ajith’s film, or will there be a fair market for all kinds of movies to fight it out at the Tamil cinema box-office.
