Suriya-Siva’s Kanguva to be trimmed by 12 minutes; makers to reduce volume too
Acknowledging the responses from the audience, the makers of Kanguva have reportedly decided to trim the film by 12 minutes, and also reduce the volume of the film in theatres.

Five days after the release of Kanguva, the much-anticipated Suriya-Siva film, the makers have decided to take corrective measures following criticisms surrounding the movie. One of the primary concerns among moviegoers was the loudness of the film, which proved to be one of the most discussed aspects of Kanguva. KE Gnanavel Raja, who backed the film under his Studio Green banner, responded to it by saying that Kanguva’s audio would be reduced by a couple of points to ensure a seamless experience at the theatres.
In addition, it is now reported that the makers have decided to trim Kanguva by about 12 minutes to reduce the runtime of the film to 2 hours and 22 minutes. It is expected that the movie’s present-day portions would be the most affected as it was the most criticized aspect of the film. Kanguva, which traverses between 2024 and 1070 AD, received a lot of negativity over the former portions featuring Suriya as Francis. In this portion of the movie, he is joined by Disha Patani, Yogi Babu and Redin Kingsley. With many viewers finding these portions cumbersome, the makers might have decided to do away with the majority of these scenes, and instead, delve directly into the narrative of 1070 AD.

Incidentally, one of the many voices that called out Kanguva for a rather uninteresting first half hour was actor and Suriya’s wife Jyotika. Expressing her opinion about the film, she said, “Definitely the first half hour doesn’t work and the sound is jarring.” However, Jyotika also said that flaws are par for the course in such ‘experimental’ films and there is a planned propaganda against the film. While Kanguva did receive a lot of negative feedback, especially on social media, it also had its fair share of positive responses.
The film, headlined by Suriya, marked the Tamil debuts of Bobby Deol and Disha Patani, and hit the screens on November 14. Kanguva has been faring below expectations at the box-office with the film making just Rs 3.15 crore on its first Monday, and witnessing an almost 85 % fall in the collections. With the changes in the runtime and volume, it would be interesting to see if Kanguva fares better at the box office or it is a classic case of too little too late.
