After winning the Tiger Award at International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2021 for his debut film Pebbles aka Koozhangal, PS Vinothraj has yet again made Tamil cinema proud by making his second feature film, Kottukkaali, the first Tamil film to premiere at Berlin International Film Festival aka Berlinale. The movie was selected under the Forum section at the festival and was screened on 16 February 2024.

Now, a video shared by the official X (formerly Twitter) handle of Sivakarthikeyan Productions, the banner behind the film, shows a glimpse of the team’s experience at Berlinale. The caption read, “History is made! #Kottukkaalibecomes the officially selected FIRST Tamil film to have its world premiere at the prestigious @berlinale, 74 years strong. This is a moment of immense pride for all of us! Let the world applaud the brilliance of our Tamil cinema.” In the video, the film’s lead actor Soori, director PS Vinothraj and other team members are seen having a fun time.

The Indian Express critic Shubhra Gupta who caught the premiere of Kottukkaali at the film festival wrote, “Kottukaali is self-taught Vinothraj’s second feature, and makes good on the promise of his 2021 Rotterdam break-out ‘Koozhangal’ (Pebbles), a hardscrabble tale of a father-and-son trekking across a parched landscape in search of a missing element that will make them whole.”

Kottukkaali follows the tale of Meena, an adamant girl who refuses to say yes to a match selected by her family. Instead, she is in love with a boy from socially-discriminated caste. The film is about the journey of the family to an exorcist to make her accept the match. Anna Ben and Soori have played the lead roles in the movie.
