Rajinikanth draws parallels between Jailer and Baashha, says he is scared now: ‘I’ve been plagued by the fear…’
Rajinikanth recently drew parallels between Nelson Dilipkumar's Jailer and his timeless gangster classic Baashha. He also mentioned that he is genuinely worried now.

Despite facing two consecutive setbacks, Superstar Rajinikanth remained resolute and determined not to waver. Following a two-year hiatus after Annaatthe, he made a remarkable comeback with Nelson Dilipkumar’s Jailer. Jailer’s outstanding performance at the box office, amassing a staggering Rs 601.6 crore in global earnings during its theatrical run, has propelled the action thriller to become the highest-grossing Tamil film ever, second only to the Shankar-Rajinikanth duo’s science-fantasy action film 2.0.
Simultaneously, the Superstar recently drew parallels between Jailer and his timeless gangster classic Baashha (1995). He expressed genuine apprehension about surpassing this level of success in his upcoming projects.
While addressing the gathering at Jailer’s success meet, Rajinikanth shared, “My happiness lasted merely five days after the film’s monumental success. Since then, I’ve been plagued by the fear of how to achieve greater or at least equally remarkable success in my future endeavours. I’m genuinely worried now.”
He also recalled that producer Kalanithi Maran confidently dubbed Jailer as “2023’s Baashha” after watching its preview, predicting that it would emerge as a historic success. “During the audio launch, Kalanithi Maran said that Jailer will be a megahit and a recordmaker. Even I was baffled seeing him making these statements with such surety. He should be an astrologer,” Superstar added.

“After Baashha, since I had already shifted to starring in one film per year or every two years, I made deliberate attempts to ensure that my subsequent project was distinct in every aspect. Hence, with Muthu, I took great care to avoid any resemblances between that and Baashha. However, my upcoming film (Lal Salaam) also shares a modern tone. If I am feeling this tense, one can only imagine Nelson’s level of tension. Nevertheless, with the right team of technicians, we can replicate this success multiple times,” he added.
Commending Malayalam actor Vinayakan for his outstanding portrayal of the antagonist Varman, Rajini remarked, “Just as Lord Rama garnered respect in part due to Ravana, similarly, it’s Varma’s character that has earned Jailer his respect.”
He also showered praise on producer Kalanithi Maran, director Nelson Dilipkumar, composer Anirudh Ravichander, cinematographer Vijay Kartik Kannan, editor Nirmal, and all other cast and crew members, including Shivarajkumar, Mohanlal and Jackie Shroff who played cameo roles in the film.
