Happy Birthday Prabhudheva: Iconic choreographer shares his experience of working with dancing diva Madhuri Dixit for Kay Sera Sera
In a recent interview, Prabhudheva shared his experience of working with Madhuri Dixit, and how he left Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja shooting mid-way.

The multi-talented Prabhudheva has turned 50 today. Nobody would have gauged that a young boy, who started out as a dancer making his moves behind the heroes in the late 80s, would become an influential figure in Indian cinema. Prabhudheva was credited as a dancer in Mani Ratnam’s Mouna Ragam. He quickly became a choreographer at a young age making stars of Indian cinema dance to his tunes.
Over the years, Prabhudheva has choreographed songs that have become nationwide hits, and a few like “Rowdy Baby” (from VIP 2) have become a worldwide sensation. However, one cannot forget his magic in the late 90s and early 2000s. In a way, Prabhudheva, who is fondly known as Indian Michael Jackson, brought a fresh dancing style to the Indian film industry that hadn’t experimented much with choreography till then.
In a recent interview with O2india, Prabhudheva reminisced how he choreographed “Kay Sera Sera” from Pukar (2000). “They had already completed shooting for the song, and they were not happy. Then they wanted me to come do the song, and it was actually a recreation of a Tamil song “Kadhal Niagara” from En Swasa Kaatre. It was a great song. Madhuri madam was in the Hindi version. I told them I will do to the best of my capabilities.”
He added, “Kay Sera Sera was a six-and-half minute song, but they kept only four-and-half minutes in the film. We danced for the full song duration. I told Madhuri madam, ‘Mam, I want to show your talent to the world. So, please adjust if it is tough.’ She told me, ‘Even if it’s twenty or forty or hundred rehearsals, I will be there.’ And she did it! I didn’t change a single step for her because she did everything. It was a great experience.”
It was Prabhudheva’s choice to have the red backdrop as it would highlight the dancers and the audience focus would be just on the artistes. “To talk about the music, again it was a superb song. What else to say about it! I had to match my choreography to such a great song.”
Prabhudheva also revealed how he backed out of Boney Kapoor’s 1993 film Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja, which was the biggest film back at that time. “After four days in Mumbai, I got homesick and told Boney sir that I am going. He was shocked. I told him I was homesick. Back then we used to shoot a song in a matter of three to four days, but for that film, it was taking a long time as stars used to come very late. We were just waiting for them simply. So, I told sir that this was not my style and left. I was a young guy,” he said.
