Ever since Arivu made headlines with “Enjoy Enjaami”, the indie song that took the world by storm, fans wanted him to collaborate with leading music directors of Tamil cinema–especially with AR Rahman, who experimented with rap songs back in the 90s. When it was announced that Rahman is composing the songs for Maari Selvaraj’s Maamannan, fans anticipated that it would finally lead to the collaboration of Arivu and ARR. With the song “Manna Maamanna”, the much-expected collaboration has happened.

Arivu, a Tamil rapper known for his extremely fast raps that are also poetic and piercing, has penned the lyrics for the song. The lines are about the voice of the downtrodden. The starting lines of the film hint at the uprising of the character, who finally finds his voice and lets go of his past. The title of the song, Manna Maamanna, comes pretty late in the song and how! That is perhaps the highlight of the entire number.

On top of the lyrics and Arivu, the song has visuals from what looks like the photoshoot for the film. It features Vadivelu and Udhayanidhi Stalin getting suited up and posing with swag.

Maamannan, the third venture of Mari Selvaraj, has Vadivelu, Udhaynidhi Stalin, Fahadh Faasil, and Keerthy Suresh in the lead roles. At the audio launch of the film, Mari said that he was inspired by Esaki character of Vadivelu from Kamal Haasan’s Devar Magan, and reimagined him as the hero, which led to the creation of Maamannan.
