Kangana Ranaut’s Thalaivii, a biopic of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, was released in 2021 to a middling response at the box office. Though the actor received praise for her performance, it didn’t help the film mint money. Now, according to a report, Zee Studios, which distributed the film across the country, has demanded the makers of the biopic to refund an amount of Rs 6 crore.

The Times of India report claimed that Zee Studios had paid an advance amount of Rs 6 crore, which has not been returned by the makers. Over the last two years, the company has been demanding a refund through emails and phone calls in vain. Now, with no other course of action, Zee Studios is considering taking things to court.

Directed by Vijay of Madarsapattinam fame, Thalaivii also featured Arvind Swami as ADMK founder and former CM MG Ramachandran. The film followed the life of Jayalalithaa from being an actor to turning into one of Tamil Nadu’s strong political figures. The film was made on a lavish budget, but according to Bollywood Hungama, it didn’t collect more than Rs 1.46 crore at the Indian box office. Other reports claim that the movie only collected about Rs 4 crore from across the world in its short theatre run.

After Thalaivii, Kangana Ranaut starred in Dhaakad, which was also a colossal box office failure. She will next be seen as former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the period film Emergency. Kangana is also part of the Tamil film Chandramukhi 2, the second part of Rajinikanth’s 2005 blockbuster Chandramukhi. The movie, also starring Raghava Lawrence in the lead role, is directed by P Vasu.
