The film Nayakan (1987), which holds a special place in Tamil society’s collective consciousness, continues to be a talking point whenever the genre of crime in Kollywood is discussed. Heavily inspired by Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather (1972), the Tamil iteration propelled its director Mani Ratnam to superstardom. Now, after 36 years, Nayakan is set to be re-released in theatres ahead of star Kamal Haasan‘s 69th birthday.

A new poster of the film is unveiled in social media with the release date revealed to be November 3. Not just in Tamil, the dubbed versions of the film will be released in Kerala and Karnataka as well.

Nayakan follows the story of a fugitive named Velu, who runs away from Tamil Nadu to Mumbai. He gets involved in drug smuggling and becomes a powerful gangster in the area, helping the oppressed. The film was appreciated for being different from Tamil films that were made in those times. Other than Kamal Haasan, the film had Saranya, Delhi Ganesh, Nasser, Janagaraj, and Krithika in important roles. Ilaiyaraaja composed the memorable background score and songs for Nayakan.

Re-releasing classic films has become a trend in Tamil cinema currently. Earlier, Kamal Haasan’s Anbe Sivam (2003) and Rajinikanth’s Baba (2002) were released to decent footfalls. Other than Nayakan, Kamal Haasan’s silent film Pesumpadam (1987) is also getting re-release, according to Kamal Haasan’s home banner Raaj Kamal Films International.

Meanwhile, Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam are coming together for a film, which will have music by AR Rahman. The untitled film will go on floors once the two complete their existing commitments. Currently, Kamal is working on Indian 2 and yet-untitled film director H Vinoth.
