Karthik Subbaraj’s Jigarthanda DoubleX is all set for release on November 10 and as it marks the first-ever collaboration between actor-directors Raghava Lawrence and SJ Suryah, cinema enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the period action comedy.
A spiritual successor to Subbaraj’s highly acclaimed film Jigarthanda, the new movie features a story set in 1975 where a Madurai-based gangster (Raghava Lawrence) and a filmmaker (SJ Suryah) lock horns. “They are at war, but you’ll have to watch the film to understand why. The earlier film was made at a budget of Rs 20 crore, while this instalment has been made at a cost of ₹100 crore. It’s big not only due to its budget but also because of the grandness of the storyline,” Suryah said during a chat with The Hindu.
Stating that the role presented various challenges to him due to its multifaceted nature, Raghava commented, “He (Karthik Subbaraj) does not act and show. We have to enact as per his instructions and give him a handful of options, from which he will choose wisely.”
“If my previous film Mark Antony had a predominantly high-pitched performance, Jigarthanda DoubleX will have lots of silence and a restrained performance. This was a big task for me as it required me to perform even when there were no dialogues,” Suryah added.
During another chat with the same publication, director Karthik Subbaraj said that Jigarthanda DoubleX serves as his closest homage to Western films and Hollywood icon Clint Eastwood, and veteran Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray. “When we made the first promo for the first Jigarthanda, it featured a poster of Clint Eastwood. In the new film, the script lends itself very close to the Western tropes, and I have tried to explore it to the maximum,” he stated.
“The story of Jigarthanda DoubleX is set in 1975, and at that time, Satyajit Ray was a working legend, and I wanted to incorporate it into the story,” the director added.
Bankrolled jointly by Stone Bench Films, Five Star Creations and Invenio Origin, the film also stars Nimisha Sajayan, Shine Tom Chacko and Naveen Chandra in key roles. While its music has been composed by Santhosh Narayanan, S Thirunavukkarasu has handled DoubleX’s cinematography and Shafique Mohamed Ali is the editor.
