Even though his last two movies didn’t perform well at the box office and faced substantial criticism for their underwhelming quality, Superstar Rajinikanth has once again demonstrated his unmatched ability to attract cinema lovers to theatres. Despite the passing of 10 days since its release, his Jailer continues to generate significant earnings even on weekdays, reaffirming Rajinikanth’s status as the reigning King of Indian cinema, particularly in terms of box-office success.

Now, the Nelson Dilipkumar directorial has officially crossed the Rs 500 crore mark worldwide, surpassing the total collection of Mani Ratnam’s epic historical action movie Ponniyin Selvan: I, which earned Rs 488.36 crore during its entire run.

Jailer on Monday generated approximately Rs 6.1 crore (nett), leading to a cumulative domestic total of Rs 287.7 crore, according to early estimates shared by industry tracker Sacnilk. It is anticipated that the movie will continue its successful streak by collecting around Rs 5 crore on Tuesday.

On Monday, the Tamil actioner witnessed an overall 24.84 per cent Tamil occupancy. Initially, during the morning shows, the movie witnessed a 14.98 per cent occupancy within the Tamil market. However, as the day unfolded, the percentages experienced a consistent increase: rising to 22.36 per cent during the afternoon showings and reaching 31.33 per cent during the evening shows. But the percentage dipped slightly during the night screenings and stood at 30.69.

With an India gross of Rs 329.4 crore and overseas gross of Rs 178 crore, Jailer’s worldwide collection currently stands at Rs 507.4 crore.

At the moment, the only notable competitor that matches Jailer’s impressive box office success is Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2, which is enjoying box office dominance in the northern states and has so far amassed an India nett of Rs 389.1 crore and a worldwide gross of Rs 487 crore.

Now, the only thing standing between Jailer and the title of the “highest-grossing Tamil film of all time” is S Shankar’s science-fantasy action film 2.0 (2018), featuring Rajinikanth himself. According to Sacnilk, 2.0 amassed a global box office collection of Rs 723.30 crore during its theatrical run.

Jailer has Rajinikanth essaying a man out to avenge the death of his son, who is a cop. The film has Mohanlal, Shivarajkumar and Jackie Shroff in important cameos. The action-packed entertainer also stars Priyanka Mohan, Tamannaah Bhatia, Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Vasanth Ravi and Vinayakan.

Pointing out that Rajinikanth and Nelson Dilipkumar rediscover the alchemy of a good masala film with Jailer, The Indian Express’ Kirubhakar Purushothaman wrote in his review of the film: “Jailer is Rajinikanth’s version of Kamal Haasan’s Vikram, but with a twist. Saying that doesn’t take away anything from this fun-filled entertainer.”

Jailer star Rajinikanth comments on Yogi controversy

Meanwhile, Rajinikanth, who landed in Chennai on Monday evening, addressed the media and thanked the people of Tamil Nadu and the rest of the world for making Jailer a huge success.

Commenting on the Yogi controversy, Rajinikanth said: “Whether a sanyasi or a yogi, it is my habit to fall at their feet even if they are younger than me. That’s what I did.”

The top actor’s remarks came in response to a reporter’s query over the “controversy” surrounding his touching the feet of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath recently during his visit to Lucknow.
