AR Rahman is facing severe backlash for the ‘poorly organised’ Marakkuma Nenjam concert in Chennai. The poor management of the event led to a stampede-like situation leaving children and old people physically and mentally stressed and many women even getting molested. Twitter is abuzz with accusations against the organisers and Rahman.
Rahman is also getting criticised for the event having improper parking facilities that led to huge traffic inside and outside the premises of the venue. The OMR and ECR stretches came to a standstill due to the crowd which delayed commutation by several hours. All these arrangements are contrary to Rahman’s claims in an interview with director Gautam Menon, which was published by the concert’s organisers ACTC Digital ahead of the event.
There was a lot of hype for the concert as it was the first AR Rahman concert in Chennai after a gap of five years. While people complained about the lack of parking facilities, Rahman in the interview said that he was working towards providing a smooth event. He said, “The show itself is a huge thing. We are trying to make it really smooth. Toilets and parking should be fine. There shouldn’t be any traffic. I am concerned about all that stuff.”
Police have launched an investigation into the alleged mismanagement of the concert that led to overcrowding and severe traffic congestion on the East Coast Road, south of Chennai. While the investigation is underway, AR Rahman took to Twitter to take responsibility for all the issues at the concert. He also provided a mail address for the fans to seek remedy.
