After the hard-hitting historical drama, Bhopal: A Prayer For Rain, set amidst the real-life Bhopal gas disaster that had occurred in India in December 1984, Tanishtha Chatterjee has several upcoming films to her credit. She will be seen playing a pivotal role in Leena Yadav-helmed Parched, Unindian and Monsoon Shootout as well as Ananth Mahadevan-directed Rough Book and Gaur Hari Dastaan.
In Bhopal…, she plays the role of Leela, the wife of the autorickshaw driver played by Rajpal Yadav who later joins the Union Carbide plant. Chatterjee, who has worked in several Hollywood films, is of the opinion that although the work culture is very different, female actors the world over face similar problems. “The world predominantly is still patriarchal. It’s a little more open in developed countries than it is in India. But even in the West, its a long way for women to really have an equal footing. Indian films are a reflection of the society we live in. The country, right now, is going through a revolution. Women are coming up and speaking out, and Indian films are slowly reflecting those changes. As a culture, we still like to see women in their pristine beauty. The moment they mature we make them mothers and strip them of all desires and joys of life,” rues the actor.
