What triggered the idea of Film Companion?
Actually it’s something we’ve been talking about for some time now— a platform for film lovers by film lovers. When my shows on Star wrapped, we decided to plunge into it and create quality content about film for the internet. It’s very exciting because we don’t have any time restrictions, we can reach people around the globe and we can experiment with content.
Given that almost everyone has an opinion on films and is willing to put it out there , what would you say is the biggest challenge of being on the worldwideweb?
The challenge is finding viewers for quality content. But I’m sure they are out there.
In addition to film reviews, what sort of content can we look forward to on this channel?
Video essays, on-set features, festival coverage and interviews
What sort of an impact has the internet made on film content and films, if any?
I don’t think any aspect of our life has been left untouched by the net. Directors, writers, technicians all have access to so much material on the net. Film lovers like us can read entire scripts on the net (10 years ago I had done an article on the Bhutanese film industry and a writer told me that he learned his craft by reading scripts on the net). So it’s shaped sensibilities for both makers and viewers. It has also shaped the conversation about film because actors are directly in touch with audiences, responses to movies are instant, every little thing about movies, box-office and stars is reported. In fact it’s hard really to gauge the influence because it’s so huge.
What has the response to Film Companion been so far?
Pretty amazing— our first video was my review of Kick which of course stirred up a hornet’s nest. Salman Khan fans attacked me. Other people defended me. Lots of sound and fury, which is always fun!
Is this a business venture or just a content platform? If it is a business venture, what sort of a model are you adopting?
It is a business venture, but our business mantra comes from Pixar’s John Lasseter: Quality is the best business plan.
