Directed by Smeep Kang, the Carry On Jatta series has been a huge success and the first in the series, released in 2012, propelled Gippy Grewal to stardom, putting Punjabi cinema on the map. The third in the series, Carry On Jatta 3 relies on the brand of humour perfected by Kang but with mixed results.

The film unfolds in London, where Jass (Gippy Grewal) is an eligible bachelor, whose father Advocate Dhillon (Jaswinder Bhalla) wants him to get married. Jass falls in love with Meet (Sonam Bajwa). However, as always, there’s a twist. Meet’s uncle Dilawer (Nasir Chinyoti) has a tiff with Advocate Dhillon and both sides resolutely decide against the marriage.

Undeterred, Jass devises a plot with his friend, Honey (Gurpreet Ghuggi), in order to get the woman of his dreams. One hare-brained scheme after another abounds and in navigating the challenges that come his way, Jass finds himself in a much bigger mess than before. In order to hide one lie, the two friends rope in Goldie (Binnu Dhillon) and together, they weave a web of lies. The rest of the film focuses on Jass and Goldie untangling themselves from the madness that ensues and getting the families to agree to Jass and Meet’s union.

The hallmark of the Carry On Jatta series has been the comedy and hilarious dialogues that are fondly remembered and repeated by audiences with much glee. In the third part too, the rib-tickling dialogues largely keep the momentum of the film going. Although the jokes are a bit silly, they are nonetheless topical and entertaining. A case in point, one character says, “The girl is a bomb”, the other says, “Do you intend to throw it on Ukraine?”

From physical gestures, clever wordplay, and situational comedy, the film tries to create a seamless flow of laughter throughout the film. However, the pace starts to slacken, especially in the second half, only to be rejuvenated towards the end. The jokes become tiresome and the film whittles down to become a bit of a noisy mess. The film is also so eager to go from one comic situation to another that a few scenes feel completely unnecessary and even rushed.

The sequel to the original film, Carry on Jatta 2 (2018) introduced Sonam Bajwa to the cast and the latest in the series has most actors reprising their roles from the original film, including Binnu Dhillon, Gurpreet Ghuggi and Jaswinder Bhalla. Pakistani comedian Nasir Chinyoti also joins in to add dollops of laughter with his well-known antics.

Even BN Sharma makes a cameo appearance with his iconic dialogue from the 2012 film, ‘Mujhe Kuch Nahi Pata’. Shinda Grewal is a delight to watch and lights up the screen with his innocent charm. Writer Naresh Kathooria, who is well-known for injecting his brand of silly humour and hilarious dialogues, makes a guest appearance in the film as well.

The ensemble cast of supporting actors is the backbone of this film and their comic interactions form the core of the film. Each character has their own quirks that are woven into the narrative and their eccentricities create a comedic chemistry between them. Audiences are well-attuned to the witty dialogues and physical comedy and one can see a few more dialogues from the film filtering into common usage.

The music of the film does not disappoint at all. The crackling, glitzy title song, “Lehenga” and “Jatti” by Ammy Virk and Gippy Grewal are memorable dance tracks. B Praak’s soulful melody “Farishtey” and the romantic “Bura Haal” are beautiful tracks as well.

An overall family entertainer, Carry On Jatta 3 is sure to repeat the success of its earlier films. Despite its flaws, audiences will be flocking to the cinema halls to make the most of the early release on the Eid weekend.
