Rapper King, while opening about the lack of support desi artistes get in India, said the audience is influenced by the Western culture.

Fresh off his collaboration with MC Stan on “F*ck What They Say,” and riding the wave of his viral hit “Tu Aake Dekh Le” with Nick Jonas,  rapper King is making waves in the music industry. But the artiste is also using his platform to address a pressing issue: the lack of unconditional support for homegrown talent in India.

In a recent conversation with Zoom TV, King expressed his disappointment over the tendency of Indian audiences to prematurely dismiss local artistes while blindly idolising Western counterparts.

“People turn up for all those artistes with whom they connect from the heart and not numbers. Ghar ki murgi daal barabar hoti hai logon k liye. We are so driven by Western culture that we think they are best at everything. There’s a perception that Western artistes are inherently superior, which leads to local talent being undervalued,” he expressed.

King lamented that Indians only criticise their own people and desi artistes are torn down for every small mistake. However, they’re not appreciated enough when they do something good. “We only criticise our own people, not always but most of the time. We criticise our artistes for every small mistake but do not appreciate them enough when they do something good,” he rued.

Despite this, King remains optimistic, pointing to the success stories of Diljit Dosanjh and “Tauba Tauba” singer Karan Aujla as proof that Indian artistes can captivate audiences on a massive scale. He stressed. “Look at what Diljit Dosanjh is doing and how he is representing us globally. Karan Aujla is doing his India tour now and 100,000 tickets were sold out in Delhi within 48 hours. So yeah, people are turning up for those they connect with from the heart.”

Diljit recently performed at The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and became the first Indian artiste to perform on an American late-night TV show. The singer-actor, who manifested this a long time ago, has been making waves internationally, performing to sold-out auditoriums at his on-going concert, Dil-Luminati Tour and breaking several records.
