Euphoria frontman Palash Sen tried to expose the dubious practises that he has observed in the Indian music scene, from reality shows being ‘scripted’ to live performances being lip-synced. In an interview, he said that up to 99% of live performances these days are, in fact, fake.

Chatting with The Lallantop, Palash cited the example of how the crowd threw eggs at Dannii Minogue when they discovered that she wasn’t singing live, and he said that when audiences in India realise that they’re paying to watch singers lip-sync, they will also be outraged. He said that only a handful of performers, such as Shankar Mahadevan, Vishal-Sheykhar, Arijit Singh, Sonu Nigam, Sunidhi Chauhan, and Daler Mehndi still perform live on stage. The rest are just lip-syncing to a pre-recorded track that plays in the background.

“It is a shame,” he said, adding, “It happens not only in India, but all over the world. There’s no truth left.” He said that this is the era of ‘perfection’, and the industry is obsessed with presenting perfect faces and voices.

Palash also spoke about his experiences as a reality show judge, and recalled getting into arguments with his fellow judge Daler Mehndi on the show, Fame X. He said, “There is no such thing as reality on those shows. I tried to be a crusader for the truth on one of those shows. I used to get in arguments with Daler paaji. He would always follow the script, but I was fighting for the truth. Who can judge beauty and singing? It’s all subjective. These days, everybody sings very well. So often, you’re surprised when a talented singer is eliminated. But he’s eliminated only because they know his elimination will be shocking. Watch these shows like Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and forget about it.”

The debate about scripted reality shows has been raging for quite some time now. Recently, Mini Mathur said that she quit as the host of Indian Idol when she realised that they were trying to ‘construct’ reality.
